OprahFail

Let me start this post by saying I am not a fan of Oprah. I don't dislike her, I just don't buy into the "gospel according to Oprah". But when I heard she was going to be doing a show on diabetes, of course I had to see it for myself.

I lasted about 20 minutes. I think the tears started about 5 seconds in, the gritting of teeth about 10 seconds in, and since the exploding of my head seemed imminent, I turned off the TV. I think I need to fly up to Chicago for a good ol' fashioned groin kicking.

I don't have much to say, since I didn't see that much, but here are a few observations:

-Where does Oprah get the figure that we are spending on diabetes (the one that will "bankrupt" the American health care system). Is this just type 2, or all types combined?

- I did note that they differentiated between types 1 and 2, but I don't think enough was said about it. Also, Dr. Oz said that a type 1 does "not make enough insulin". Ummmmm, how about ANY insulin? What about saying that it's an auto-immune disease? It would have been nice to touch on the fact that type 1 is not from a bad diet or lack of exercise. Grrrr.

- Why on earth did they use a woman with type 1 as an example of what can happen if the are mostly addressing type 2s? I think this did nothing but muddy the waters between the two types. Granted, I didn't see much of the interview with her because Elise's kept wandering into the room and I thought it a little too graphic for her to watch, but did they say why she ended up that way?

Well, that's my two cents... like I said, I didn't watch a lot of the show. I'm very interested to see what everyone else has to say.

  1. I haven't seen it...yet! But I will....something happened to our cable modem and I couldn't even record it on our DVR!! grr......I've read bits and pieces about it on Oprah.com (on the message board) and from what I gathered...it was just as you said!
Maybe we should ALL go to Chicago for a little groin kickin'!!

  2. Didn't see it yet. Don't know if I will. Not sure I can take it today. Diabetes has already had me in tears today. I don't need Oprah to push me over the edge. I just wish they'd give us our due time. Educate about T1, too. That's all I got right now. I just don't have anything left right now...

  3. I didn't see it either, by the time it was on my time zone facebook was already on fire with ANGRY type 1 Moms so I figured it wasn't worth my time.
I wish someone would do a show just focusing on tpe 1!!!

  4. Joanne you should have seen facebook we where up in arms over this. I have not seen the show yet but I have it on my DVR.

I did however write the Oprah show before the diabetes episode asking them to please explain and clear up all the confusion. Well I guess they just don't listen! :(

I really think that they need some wonderful, amazing, strong mom's and kids on the show to educate the people about T1. So what do you say ladies.... up for a trip?

  5. I only watched a few min of it too. I did DVR it in case I'm in a better mood tomorrow.
I had a lot of the same questions you did. They never mentioned that that lady probably didn't care for herself like she should have.
Honestly, what I saw was exactly what I ecpected it to be.

  6. I couldn't watch it. The only reason I might is so that I can write an informed KICK A** letter to the show.
