What is the sound of one hand clapping?

Elise was in her room, reading.

I was in another room, nursing Mattias.

I checked Elise before I started nursing. 99 and holding steady on the CGM. It's almost dinner time and that's a completely normal number for her at this time.

10 minutes later... "beep, beep, beep", says the dexcom.

"Elise?" I ask. No answer. Crap.

"ELISE?" I bellow. Silence. Crap-on-a-stick.

"ELISE! ELISE! ELISE!" Nothing. CRAP CRAP CRAP.

Off comes a very hungry and protesting Mattias. I put him in his crib and run down the hall to find Elise asleep.

Or is she?

CGM says 90 steady. Meter says 134. Mom says a silent prayer of thanks.

A Dexcom beeping and silence from your child; two of the scariest sounds in the world.

  2. I love this... such a simple post to show just how quickly our lives can go from serene to full-blown panic.
    Thanks for sharing, Jo.

  3. We don't have a CGM, but prolonged silence from the Bean always has me running to check on her.

  5. eeek...I agree, those are the moments where I KNOW that an artificial pancreas would be a bit FAIL with the way technology is now. I'm glad she was fine and that you're such a quick action mama to check on her.

  6. we had a similar thing happen on Monday, Dex beeped low, 86 straight....great, we were on our way to a friend's house and would be eating soon. A couple minutes later, we asked Bryce a question and got no answer. He was asleep...or was he? Ugh! the thoughts that go through a Dmoms mind!!! Do we pull over or can we wait five more minutes till we arrive? Turns out he was fine and woke as soon as we pulled in the driveway. anyhow....

  7. SIGHH...my heart just about stopped while reading that! I find it so stressful being a parent of two little ones. I'm amazed at you and the other parents of diabetic children out there. Your job is not easy! I'm happy everything was fine :)

  9. Oh...how I hated silence from Joe. I always presumed the worst! Unfortunately it is a must with a type 1 kiddo in the house.

(((HUGS))) and glad all was OK with sweet Elise!
