And we're live in 3... 2... 1

Today, as of 5:06 pm, we are officially pod people. Two hours after our first bolus we're sitting at 383. We almost NEVER see numbers like that and me no likey.

I know it's a learning curve. I know I can't expect to have the same control as I used to at first... but maaaaaaan. Seeing that number is like a punch to the gut. My brain is itching to figure out what went wrong.

But for now, I have a little girl who is absolutely ecstatic over not getting a shot at dinner for the first time in over three years. And that is enough to make me not obsess over that number.

For now.

  3. Woohoo! I know the number isn't great...but know that that will get straight before too long and you'll be Poding (is that a word???) like a pro! So glad Elise is enjoying it so far!

  4. Congratulations and welcome to the Podclub!! No shots is a major victory don't worry too much about that learning curve. It is steep but short . . . The ride down the other side is so worth it. And, it only takes about 5 minutes to do a Pod change now. Woo-to-the-Hoo!!

  9. Ohhhhh noooooo!!! I must say, when we started the pump I HATED it because we never saw crazy numbers like that either! I finally freaked out after a week or two and actually had to listen to the CDE about increasing dosing all around, even though I was SCARED TO DEATH because I was SURE the dosing they suggested couldnt be right!

I had to realize that pumping is FAR different than injections, and it all ended up ok once I understood that!

I know how hard the transition is......I know how happy Elise is, and I know how happy you are that she is happy! Been there. Done that...and I KNOW that YOU if anyone, will get it all adjusted just right! I know you want to say screw it....but it WILL work out! ((HUGS))

  12. EXCITING! I am so happy for Elise enjoying a meal with no shot, what a weird/wonderful moment for you all - I belt you'll get this pod deal ironed out soon enough. It took us a while, but we were also still newbies to the whole d thing still. Take it one day at a time, it will work out :)

  13. Our diabetes center lowers the overall basal when you start pumping and you increase basal rates, after testing all time periods, from there. Not sure, but I think some people use less insulin for basals when pumping; some use more. It's high but they have to be safe. Call CDE and start with basal testing and adjustments. We saw the same thing and, yes, it did take us two or three months to figure out her patterns (which continuously change). You will have much better control, I think, but you do have to give it time. Me no likey either :(. Hang in there! P.S. You are going to have to figure out her patterns; and figure out how her basals really work. I think they start with four basal time periods -- one time period 6am to noon; next noon to 6pm; next 6pm to midnight; next midnight to 6am. Children will usually drop with lower basals 1am thru 5am was ours but overnight.... and usually a rise in the evening 6am thru 10pm was ours (1.5 times the normal hourly rate). You will figure it out. Do you have "Pumping Insulin" by John Walsh. Gives you an idea but we could not and still cannot use his formulas for insulin sensitivity (correction factor) and insulin to carb ratio. But book is indispensible. Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Scheiner works great for exercise particularly.

  14. Ahhhh, those 383 numbers sound like us when we started. We needed more insulin. We always had to realize that the pump didn't always start pushing out insulin right after insertion. It takes awhile to figure all this stuff out. But, I'm sure you know that. Have fun with the remote option!

  15. Hooray!

We have post-pump change highs sometimes. I think we've got it figured out though, through a lot of trial and error.

  17. We had a rocky start too. It does get better. Oh so much better! I must say we got our first and only "HI" on the second day of pumping. I wanted to cry! Our numbers were crazy for a while. Highest AIC too (though still in range) was after 2 months pumping. That said, it is an absolutely wonderful life changing little thing. The freedom and flexibility is amazing. We LOVE it and have been happily pumping for a year and half now. Congrats and good luck!

  20. I totally overlooked this post - but I am so very happy you are now POD people!!!!! Oh and those pst-change highs, we normally, for us that is, combat them with a correction of .30 to .40. You will do FABULOUS with this and look at Elise looking so very proud too!
