Finding the funny when you can

Let's face it, life with D is not a tonne of chuckles.  Very rarely does something D-related ever tickle us.  But I thought this story was too cute not to share.

From time to time we take the kids to a frozen yogurt place close by.  And as most of you know, I'm a weigher.  As in, I weigh everything that Elise eats (except when I forget my scale).  So yes, I take my scale out at the fro-yo place, and tare it up.  Get it?

Come on, how is that not funny?

Anyway... One time we went with some neighbours, and as my friend was paying, the guy at the register asked her, "what's with your friend, doesn't she trust our scales?"

She quietly informed him that my daughter had type 1 diabetes and to accurately carb count, I weigh all her food.

When my friend relayed the story to me, it was all I could do to not bust out laughing.  I had never thought of what people must think of the crazy lady with her scale and calculator, muttering things under her breath.

You know what?  I am okay with being that crazy lady.  I was crazy long before the scale anyway.

  2. I love that you "tare" it up all over town! And that is freakin' hilarious to think of them seeing you as an overparanoid customer. Definitely funny to me, too ;)

  3. Oh Jo...I can only imagine what they must think!!! Next time you should go up and tell them that they were short on their serving size by a few ounces and demand more yogurt...that'll really get 'em going.

  4. I sent Addy with a toaster and a GF waffle to a sleepover...

Doesn't EVERYONE carry a scale and a toaster everywhere?

  6. They weigh by the ounce at our yogurt shop so that is the one place you could probably forget the scale. She won't bring a scale or cups to measure so she SWAGs everything. Don't blame you for taking your scale everywhere cause SWAGing is hit or miss and certainly it is less obtrusive than pulling out measuring cups. I must warn you... you won't be able to get away with this forever. Too funny that salespeople think you are checking up on them.

  8. I hope you are able to rest up and take very good care of yourself. Recovering from surgery... I follow your blog but may have missed that. You have a very busy life, that's for sure, and it's going to get even more hectic. Congrats on the new baby. P.S. A source of cheap labor, often overlooked, are neighborhood 14 or 15 year old girls who like to babysit or help as a Mother's helper. Obviously, babysitting is out but if you can find a mother's helper for a few hours in the afternoon to help out (while you are home of course), you might be able to lay down in a lounge and oversee, rather than run around yourself. I am thinking you may need to preserve your energy.
