When a pseudo pancreas screws up

Elise went low the other night. We missed it and it was my fault. We have a baby monitor in our room, and we put Eileen right next to the monitor in her room. When Elise wakes up in the morning, I turn the receiver in our room down, so it won't wake up Mattias; who sleeps in our room.

When I went to bed that night, I forgot to turn the receiver in our room up. We missed Eileen alerting us to a LOW alarm... the one that beeps when she's below 55. We only know this because when Mattias woke us up for his 2:30 feeding, Fred and I heard Eileen loudly beeping like crazy.

When I realized what I had done, we ran into Elise's room, only to see the LOW 55 screen. When we cleared the alert, we saw that the low had occurred about an hour before and now Eileen was showing us the ???. When we checked Elise's BG, a finger poked showed her at 250. As Eileen finally came back up, we saw the number 310 with an arrow up.

I felt awful; like I had been kicked in the stomach. I couldn't believe I had forgotten something so simple. After I beat myself up for a good amount of time, I turned my attention to what I was thankful for.

That Elise's liver kicked in and possibly saved her life. I know full well what could have happened, and it takes my breath away if I think about it too much. So thank you, Elise's liver... I'm glad that you take your job seriously.

What I'd like to know is; what happened to Lenny and Harold?

  1. Oh they are on Paternity Leave - didn't you get the memo?

(((HUGS))) You are doing the best job. Hang in there. Thinking of you.

  2. or Eileen was just wrong and she never went low. We have had that happen plenty of times! Big clue is the ???. That is probably why Lenny and Harold were had nothing to worry about.

Can the liver really get someone from 55 to 310?

  3. I've had a blog in my head for the last couple weeks. I have seriousl "snooze" problems when it comes to checking the boys. I'm glad it all worked out. All is well! No what is a new day my friend!

  4. Okay add me to the serious snooze list and I cannot tell you how many times my husband has caught me before seizure sets in . Im not kidding so yeah I understand but you know im an adult and a child is a totally different matter .

  5. Lenny and Harold are exhausted...
We've actually had two times now that the pedi endo tells us to increase basals due to highs, I feel uneasy about it and do more BG checking just to find that he was actually going VERY LOW during those times and giving his liver a workout. DAMN DIABETES!
Don't beat yourself up, you figured out why you missed it and now next time you won't.
You're a great mother of two doing the best you can daily, once the moment occurs it's over and you can either learn from it and move on or dwell on it. The choice is yours...but right now you have two beautiful babes to enjoy :)

  6. You are doing an amazing Job PLEASE dont beat your self up too bad!!

  7. I had the same thought as Denise, that maybe she wasn't low at all? Either way, it could happen to any of us and probably already has to plenty of moms out there that aren't blogging! Hang in there, you're doing a fantastic job for both your kiddos!
