Flu shot fun

Yesterday we finally got Elise her flu shot. There's been some sort of nasty bug going around (people have told me it is actually the flu), so I've been nervous to take Elise to big gatherings, or places with lots of kids. Yeah, I know... I can't protect her from everything, but I've been hearing some horror stories of kiddos with D getting sick and ending up in the ER lately. Plus, I have Mattias to think about too.

I thought she'd do well with the shot, but she totally freaked. Then her BG spiked up to the 300s right afterwards (I'm thinking adrenaline... anyone else experience this?), only to come crashing down a few hours later. All I can say is thank goodness for Eileen!

I'm always hesitant to get the flu vaccine every year, but think it's better to err on the side of caution. Just as long as they don't make me get one!

  1. Even back when Bryce was on MDI and giving us no problems with his insulin shots, he would freak out having to get a flu shot. Blows my mind! Last year, got all 3 of my boys vaccinated and I swear it sounded like we were performing torture on them!

  2. Ellie went high today out of the blue and we figured out that she was upset about her Omnipod pod. She must have hit it or something she said it hurt and then proceeded to get extreamly upset about it. Next thing I know she's at 350! When she finally laid down and relaxed, falling asleep...boom she dropped down to target within about 40 minutes. It is amazing how many factors we have to factor. If we had treated that 350...ew, not good. We get flu shots now too. I HATE THEM!

  3. I get really bad adrenaline spikes. I'll spike into the 300's after an adrenaline surge, then settle back down into a normal range hour and a half or so later. I've learned (the hard way) not to correct for an adrenaline high.

  4. There has been chatter on facebook with kids having the same issues. Highs right after the shot. Hope things have evened out! I can't wait to get it done with!

  5. Hi Jo,

Joe hasn't spiked after the flu shot...it doesn't bother him, but when he would get really upset when he was younger...he would have an "adrenaline spike" - I too, learned the hard way not to fully correct one of those bad boys or our bg's were in the toilet after.

I hope you are all well! (((HUGS)))

  6. I have dogged flu shots for such a long time and I dont think I ever will get another one . I became so horribly sick the last time I took one ,years ago and they thought they were going to have to put me in the hospital . I swore right then and there I would never take a flu shot again as long as I lived . I never have and I plan to keep that same philosophy .
